Ten years ago, my mother was diagnosed with

Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive and increasingly

common form of dementia which is now estimated to affect

10% of people over the age of 65 and 50% of people over the

age of 85.1 Over the next few years, she gradually lost herself

– starting with very recent memories (where was I driving to
